Fourth of July

Both Olathe libraries will be closed on July 4th.  Have a safe and happy Fourth of July!

What to Read?

Looking for a good book to read this summer?  Each year the Children's staff at the Olathe Public Library create suggested book lists by grade level related to our summer reading program theme.  If you’re looking for a suggestion for what to read next, click one of the links below and browse the list.  You can also find printed copies of these book lists in a bookmark format at the Children’s Department of either Olathe library.

Our second big off-site program of the summer will be on Wednesday, June 28 at 2:00 p.m. at Indian Creek Community Church (12480 S. Black Bob Road).  Our featured presenter will be author and illustrator Daniel Miyares whose books include Float, Pardon Me!, Bring Me a Rock, and That Neighbor Kid.  Come learn about his wonderful picture books and hear about the creative process behind making a book.  He may even draw some pictures for us!  This program is for 1st – 5th graders, but parents and siblings are also welcome.

Awesome Birds

Our summer reading program was "for the birds" on Wednesday with an awesome program featuring the amazing birds of Wings of Love.  Parrots, cocatoos, owls, and more!  Rachael and Tierra introduced us to a variety of winged creatures who displayed their beauty and talent.  From riding a bicycle and playing basketball to saying such things as "hello" and "I love you," these birds kept us laughing all the way.  Informative and entertaining, it was a great first "big" program for the summer.  Click the pictures below for a closer look at the "Awesome Birds."

Our next big program at Indian Creek Community Church will be on Wednesday, June 28, at 2:00 p.m. It will feature acclaimed author/illustrator Daniel Miyares.  Don't miss this great opportunity to meet Mr. Miyares in person and learn about the creative process behind his wonderful picture books!

Summer Reading Kick-Off 2017

Summer at the library has officially begun!  Yesterday was our Summer Reading Kick-Off at Frontier Park.  It was a beautiful day (other than one brief burst of raindrops).  About 650 people came out to join in the fun.  Kids picked up their summer reading bags, played a variety of games, created their own special summer hats, got temporary tattoos, drew with sidewalk chalk, enjoyed a story walk, got up close and personal with a real construction digger, and even enjoyed a free lunch of hot dogs and snacks. Click the pics below for a closer look at the fun.  It was a great way to start out our summer reading program and Build a Better World!
