Happy New Year

All of us here at the Olathe Public Library would like to wish you a Happy New Year!  We hope 2016 will be a great year filled with good books and many visits to the library.  We have lots of exciting things planned and look forward to serving you in the year ahead.

Don't forget, both Olathe libraries will be closing early at 3:00 p.m. on December 31 and will be closed all day on January 1.  Both libraries will re-open at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 2.  Also, starting on Monday, January 4 the Indian Creek Library will be opening an hour earlier at 9:00 a.m. on Monday through Friday.  This means both the Downtown Library and Indian Creek Library will have the same operating hours.  Here are our hours beginning in 2016:

Monday - Thursday  9:00 a.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Friday  9:00 a.m. 6:00 p.m.
Saturday 10:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m.
Sunday   1:00 p.m. 5:00 p.m.

Some Sad News

If you are a fan of the Elephant and Piggie books by Mo Willems, you'll be sad to learn that the next book in the series—to be released in May 2016—will be the very last one.  Let's all pause for a moment of silence...

OK, enough silence.  In an October interview with Time for Kids magazine, Mo Willems stated:

"Next summer the very final Elephant and PIggie book will be published. It's called The Thank You Book and I wrote it for you to thank you for reading my stories."

That sounds like a fitting way to say goodbye to best friends Gerald and Piggie.  Fortunately for us, all the Elephant and Piggie books will be around for a long time to come.

In the meantime you can enjoy the latest Elephant and Piggie installment, I Really Like Slop!  You can also watch Mo Willems cook up a big pot of slop in the video below.  Mmm mmm good!

Story Time from Space

Are you a kid who loves books and loves space?  Then you should check out the Story Time From Space website.  You can listen to a book being read by a real astronaut from the International Space Station!  Talk about a storytime that is out of this world.  Wow!  There are currently three storytimes available with more to come.  Don't miss this unique opportunity to enjoy a storytime from outer space!

Staff Picks 2015

Each year the Olathe Public Library's Children's Services staff compiles a list of some of our favorite children's books from the past year, along with some old favorites.  Our list includes picture books, chapter books, easy readers, comics, and nonfiction titles—something for everyone.  In this seaon of gift-giving, we hope you might find some ideas for gifts for the children on your holiday shopping list.  Or perhaps you'll find a good book to read together as a family.  The holidays are a great time to share a book together.

If you would like to browse the titles on our Staff Picks list, click here to download a copy. Printed copies are also available at both libraries.  The books on our Staff Picks list will be on display throughout the month of December at both the Downtown Library and the Indian Creek Library.  The books on display may not be checked out, but we are always happy to request titles for you if none are available.

We hope you will give the gift of reading this holiday season, and be sure to make time in your busy schedule to visit the library.  Happy holidays!

Stuffed Animal Sleepover 2015

November 20.  Check out the video to see all the fun!

Tape Town

Kids were zoom-zoom-zooming around the Storytime Room with their toy trucks and cars on Friday at the Downtown Library.  As they followed the roads of Tape Town, they could make stops at the post office, the bank, the animal hospital and more.  What a fun time!  If you missed out, you can still visit Tape Town at the Indian Creek Library on Monday, November 23 between 10 a.m and noon.  Be sure to bring along your favorite toy vehicle from home.

Congratulations to the World Series winning Kansas City Royals!  What a season!  Now that the games are over, why not celebrate with a baseball book?

Star Wars Reads Day Fun

Our third annual Star Wars Reads Day celebration was a lot of fun!  Thanks to everyone who came out and celebrated all things Star Wars!  We had some fun visitors, including Boba Fett and a pint-sized Wookie!  Kids played Stormtrooper Bowling and Destroy the Death Star games.  Some young fans displayed their knowledge of Star Wars with our Character ID matching game.  Others enjoyed craft activities such as decorating their own tiny droid to take home and cutting out Yoda ears to wear.  Of course, there were Star Wars books and movies to check out.  It was a fun day at the library!
