The Grammy Awards show was last night, but the real excitement was this morning with the announcement of the Youth Media Award Winners, including the Newbery medal and Caldecott medal!  And here are the winners and honor books:

NEWBERY MEDAL for most distinguished contribution to American literature for children

Winner:  Flora & Ulysses by Kate DiCamillo

Honor Books:  Doll Bones by Holly Black
                          The Year of BIlly Miller by Kevin Henkes
                          One Came Home by Amy Timberlake
                          Paperboy by Vince Vawter

 

 

CALDECOTT MEDAL for the most distinguished American picture book for children

Winner:  Locomotive written and illustrated by Brian Floca

Honor Books:  Journey written and illustrated by Aaron Becker
                           Flora and the Flamingo written and illustrated by Molly Idle
                           Mr. Wuffles written and illustrated by David Wiesner

CORETTA SCOTT KING AUTHOR AWARD for African American author of outstanding book for children and young adults

Winner:  P.S. Be Eleven by Rita WIlliams-Garcia

CORETTA SCOTT KING ILLUSTRATOR AWARD for African American illustrator of outstanding book for children and young adults

Winner:  Knock Knock: My Dad's Dream for Me illustrated by Bryan Collier, written by Daniel Beaty

THEODOR SEUSS GEISEL AWARD for the most distinguished book for beginning readers

Winner:  The Watermelon Seed by Greg Pizzoli

SIBERT BOOK AWARD for most distinguished informational book for children

Winner:  Parrots over Puerto Rico by Susan L. Roth

PURA BELPRÉ ILLUSTRATOR AWARD honoring a Latino illustrator whose children's books best portray, affirm and celebrate the Latino cultural experience

Winner:  Niño Wrestles the World written and illustrated by Yuyi Morales
