Believe it or not, the end of the school year is just around the corner, but the Olathe Public Library is ready for an exciting summer. Our summer reading program theme is On Your Mark, Get Set...READ! We have tons of fun activities planned. Every child going into 5th grade or younger is invited to pick up a summer reading log to keep track of all their summer reading. Return your reading log at the end of the summer, between August 1 - 19, and receive a free paperback book! We have started handing out logs at the Olathe Downtown Library and will continue to do so throughout the summer. Stop by the library anytime to pick one up, and start logging those great books you are reading.
Because the Indian Creek Library is still closed, most of our summer programming will be happening at the Downtown Library, but there will be some programs offered on the east side of town at the Indian Creek Elementary School (15800 Indian Creek Pkwy.). They have graciously provided us space to hold some programs there. We will also be offering two big programs at the Indian Creek Community Church (12480 S, Black Bob Rd.). If you are just completing 5th grade, you have outgrown the Kids' summer reading program. You can now be a part of the Tween & Teen reading program. Don't forget! This coming Saturday, May 7, the Olathe Downtown Library will be celebrating Free Comic Book Day. Children in grades K - 5th can come to the Children's Department and pick out a free comic book to keep! There will be a selection of titles to choose from on a first come, first served basis. We'll start giving away comics at 10:00 a.m. and will continue until our supply runs out. Only one comic per child please. There will also be free comics available for teens and adults. We thank Elite Comics in Overland Park for their help in procuring our give-away comics. And while you are at the library, we hope you'll check out our J Graphic section of comics and graphics novels which are free to check out every day of the year!

Twelve-year-old Kyle gets to stay overnight in the new town library, designed by his hero (the famous gamemaker Luigi Lemoncello), with other students but finds that come morning he must work with friends to solve puzzles in order to escape.
Happy National Library Week! This year's theme is "Libraries Transform." Whether it's learning something new in a program, discovering a new favorite author (or a new book by an old favorite), enjoying a library storytime, listening to some live music, or just getting together with friends at the library, we hope you find your hometown library to be a transformative place!
It's been an interesting time for us as the Indian Creek Library remains closed indefinitely. We appreciate everyone's patience as we've tried to make the best out of an unfortunate situation. Some of the events happening at the Downtown Library during National Library Week include our Afterschool LEGO Club, Pizza & Pages, a Free Family Movie---Finding Nemo, a Poetry Picnic program, along with our regular storytimes. Our 6th annual LEGO Design Contest was a lot of fun! Thanks to all the creative builders who entered the contest, and thanks to all the family and friends who came out to support them.
Our judges from the KC Brick Lab organization were very impressed with all the entries. It was a tough task, but after careful deliberation they selected three winners from each age category along with a few honorable mentions. The public also voted on their favorites for our Best of Show prizes. Congratulations to all the winners!.

We hope to hold another LEGO Design Contest next year. We're considering moving it to a fall date, but stay tuned for details. Until then, we hope to see you at one of the library's LEGO Club programs or other LEGO-related activities. Keep building!
We still have openings in the Olathe Public LIbrary's 6th Annual LEGO Design Contest this Saturday, April 2. Children in grades K - 5th build an original creation with their LEGO bricks at home and bring it to the contest to be judged. There will be prizes! The Indian Creek Library will be closed indefinitely due to a water line break and flooding. People came to work this morning to find over 6 inches of water throughout the building. : ( The situation is currently being assessed. At this point we don't know how long it will take until re-opening. Keep an eye on our website and Facebook page for the latest updates.

The annual exhibit of art by elementary students from the Olathe School District is now on display at the Olathe Downtown Library. Stop by the Children's Department to see the creative efforts of these young artists. including drawings, prints, collages, ceramics, and more. But don't wait too long! The exhibit will be gone after March 24.
