Season's Readings!

As the holiday season is upon us, how about making a special family tradition of reading a favorite holiday book together?  Turn off the TV and video games, log off the computer, put down your cell phones, and spend some quality time reading together as a family.  Experience the joy of sharing a great holiday story!

Staff members of the Olathe Public Library’s Children’s Department have chosen some of their favorite books of the season.  If you need some suggestions for a good read aloud, CLICK HERE to see the complete list.  Happy reading!

Staff Picks 2017

Every year around this time the Children’s staff of the Downtown Library and Indian Creek Library pick some of our favorite children’s books from the past year, along with some old favorites, and compile a list of Staff Picks.  Copies of these books will be on display at the Downtown Library through the end of the year.  The books on display may not be checked out, but we are happy to place any requests for you on items not currently available.  If you are looking for some holiday gift ideas for the kids on your shopping list, perhaps our list will give you some ideas.  CLICK HERE to see the list.  Printed lists may also be picked up at both Olathe libraries.  Give the gift of reading this holiday season!

2017 LEGO Design Contest

The Olathe Public Library held its annual LEGO Design Contest on Saturday, November 11.  This marked our seventh year for the contest.  Thirty-four children and teens brought their original LEGO creations to be judged in three age categories.  Our judges from the KC Brick Lab LEGO Users Group had their work cut out for them.  Aftter the judging was completed, over 100 people came to view the entries and vote on their favorites for our Best in Show awards.  As always, it was a fun day and a great opportunity to see the clever, creative builds from local young LEGO enthusiasts.  Thanks to everyone who entered.

Children's Magazine Month

I bet you didn’t know October is Children’s Magazine Month.  That’s a bit of trivia only a librarian would know, right?  Why not celebrate by checking out a children’s magazine at the library?  Yes, our children’s magazines can be checked out!  They check out for three weeks just like a book.  The magazines we subscribe to include American Girl, Boy’s Life, Cricket, Discovery Girls, Highlights, Ladybug, National Geographic Kids, Practical Homeschooling, Ranger Rick, Ranger Rick Jr., Science World, and Sports Illustrated for Kids.  We do ask that you be extra careful with checked-out magazines, e.g. keep them away from hungry pets, babies, bathtubs, etc.

Did you know the library also offers free downloadable magazines that can viewed on your computer or device?  This includes children’s magazines.  Click here to learn more about downloading magazines with the rbDigital app.  Below are some of the downloadable titles for kids.  Happy Children’s Magazine Month!

Banned Books Week 2017

September 24 - 30 is Banned Books Week.  Banned Books Week is an annual national event celebrating the freedom to read and drawing attention to the harms of censorship.  It also celebrates the efforts of librarians, teachers, students, community members, and others who stand up and speak out for the freedom to read.  The video below features Dav Pilkey, author of the wildly popular (and frequently challenged) Captain Underpants books, expressing some of his views on that most important freedom—the freedom to read!

Show and (Story)Tell

Come to the Downtown Library on Monday, September 25 between 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. for Show and (Story)Tell.  At this program we ask that participants bring a photo, stuffed friend, family heirloom, or a small artifact (no living things please), and we will help turn it into a story using writing, art, and oral storytelling.  Each story collected will be complied into an online magazine to be shared with the Olathe community.  All ages welcome.  Kindergarten and younger must be accompanied by an adult.  No registration.  Come and go as you please.

You may also attend Show and (Story)Tell on Tuesday, October 24 between 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. at the Indian Creek Library.  This program is in conjunction with this year's Big Read (The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien).

We're Having a Party!
