We're Having a Party!

Are you a fan of Elephant and Piggie?  Who isn't, right?  You're invited to come celebrate the 10th anniversary of the very first Elephant and Piggie book!  The fun begins this Saturday, September 16, at 1:00 p.m. at the Downtown Library.  There will be games, activities, snacks, and more!  Everyone is welcome.  Drop in anytime between 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. and join the festivities.  Come and go as you please.

Fall Storytimes

Our fall storytimes start this week.  The library provides storytimes for a variety of ages from newborns through age 5, as well as a family storytime.  We actually offer twelve different sessions each week at different times and locations.  Check out our PROGRAMS page for more information and the complete schedules.  You can also pick up a printed program booklet at either library which lists all of our fall programs for kids including storytime schedules.  Storytimes are a great way to help instill in your child a love of reading and books from an early age...not to mention they are a lot of fun!

Labor Day & Old Settlers

Just a reminder that both Olathe libraries will be closed on Sunday, September 3 and Monday, September 4 for Labor Day.  Have a nice holiday weekend!

And don’t forget that the following weekend is Johnson County Old Settlers.  This means the Downtown Library’s parking lot will be closed, as well as the drive thru book drop, during the festivities Thursday, September, 7 through Saturday, September 9. Things should be back to normal by Sunday.  During this time parking may be scarce around the library.  Plan accordingly.  You can always return library materials at any of the book drops around town, and of course, the Indian Creek Library will be open with plenty of parking.

A Great Summer!

Well, another summer has come and gone.  We hope you all had a great one!  It was a great summer here at the Olathe Public LIbrary.  We had some terrific programs and a lot of fun.  And you may recall that last summer we only had one library open due to the flooding at Indian Creek Library, so we were especially happy to have two functioning libraries again this summer.  Yay!

We gave away 1,490 free books to kids who returned their reading logs at the end of the summer reading program.  It's always exciting to look at their logs and see all of the great books kids read this summer.  Awesome job!

Even though summer is our busiest season, don't forget that the Olathe Public Library is open all year round.  We have some great programs planned for kids this fall, and storytimes will resume in a couple of weeks.  Visit our Programs page to see all the events we have scheduled through the end of the year.  You can also pick up a program booklet at either Olathe library with the complete listings.  We hope to see you at the library throughout the school year!

Return Reading Logs

Believe it or not, our 2017 summer reading program is quickly coming to a close.  Next Monday, July 31, is the first day to return your summer reading logs.  We hope you've been reading lots of great books and remembering to write them all down on your log. Starting Monday bring back your reading log and show us what you read, and then pick out a free paperback book which is yours to keep!  We will have a variety of great books to choose from, ranging from picture books and easy readers to chapter books and nonfiction.  Come early for the best selection.  You can return your reading log at either Olathe library anytime between July 31 and August 18.  And if you don't yet have a reading log, it's not too late to get one.  Pick one up at the library a.s.a.p.!

When kids return their reading logs this summer, we'll be asking them to fill out a very brief survey to give us some feedback about our summer reading program.  We want to know what you think.  And if you attend an Olathe school, we will let your school know you participated in our summer reading program.  Some schools even have special celebrations for those who participated.  We all want to celebrate all the great reading you did this summer!

KCrew at Storytime in the Park

Our final Storytime in the Park of the summer will be on Thursday, July 27,at 10:00 a.m. at Mill Creek Park.  And it's going to be SPECIAL!  Members of the Royals KCrew will be presenting the storytime, answering questions, and taking photos!  They will also be promoting Library Night at the K.  If you are a fan of Royals baseball, you won't want to miss this special storytime.

Aaron Fowler Rocks!

Aaron Fowler and his trusty sidekick Bella the dog kept the audience entertained at our last off-site program of the summer on Wednesday, July 12.  Aaron played guitar, sang original songs, and told funny stories from his childhood.  He had everyone movin' and a groovin'!  And Bella made herself right at home.  Afterwards, everyone had the chance to give Bella some tummy-rubbing love.  Thanks, Aaron, for a great program on a hot summer day!

LEGO Lock-In 2017

It was LEGO mania at the Downtown Library on Friday evening at our LEGO Lock-In.  Kids and their grownups had a blast building bridges and skyscrapers and all kinds of cool things with the library’s collection of LEGO bricks.  Many of their amazing creations are currently on display in the Children’s Department at the Downtown Library.  Next time you are at the library, take time to check them out!  Click the photos below for a closer look.

And don’t forget that our monthly LEGO Clubs for kids in K – 5th grade will be starting up again in September.  Stay tuned for details.
