Pizza & Pages Book Lovers Club

Are you in grades 3rd - 5th?  Do you LOVE books and reading?  Help us start a brand-new club for kids who love reading, sharing, and learning more about books!  Our first meeting will be on Thursday, September 11 at 6:00 p.m. at the Main Library.  We'll eat a quick pizza dinner together and talk about books we've enjoyed recently.  What else will we do?  That's up to you!  We could create tools to help other kids find great books, write to favorite authors, watch book trailers—the possibilities are endless.  Please bring a copy of a book you've enjoyed recently to the program.(preferably a book that OPL owns, but it doesn't have to be) and be prepared to tell us a little bit about it—without giving away too much of the story!  This program will last about 90 minutes.  Registration is required.  You may register online, at either Olathe library, or by calling (913) 971-6874.

Thank You, Miss Carlotta!

After working at the Olathe Public Library for more than 33 years, Miss Carlotta will be retiring at the end of this week.  She will be greatly missed!  Her wonderful storytimes have instilled a love of books and reading in young children down through the years.  Her lively piano playing, too, has always been a favorite of the kids.  Besides working at the Children's Desk, Carlotta also did a lot of work behind the scenes.  She has been the main repairer of children's books, helping keep them clean and in good shape for our readers.  She has spent many an hour taping torn pages, gluing loose binding, erasing unwanted marks and scribbles, and sometimes cleaning off unidentifiable stains and spills.  (Eww!)  She has also served for years as an active member of the Friends of the Library board.  But most of all it is her good nature and jovial spirit that will be missed by our patrons and our staff. Carlotta has contributed to the life of the Olathe Public Library in so many ways and helped make it such a great place.

Carlotta is planning to continue volunteering around the library and helping with our book repair work, so you may still see her around.  Like they say, you can't keep a good woman down!  Enjoy your retirement, Miss Carlotta, and thanks for all you've done.

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is a free program designed to encourage adults to read 1,000 books to their children before they enter kindergarten.  Reading aloud to children, beginning in infancy, gives them the building blocks they need to become lifelong readers and learners.  Not only that, but reading together is fun!

To learn more about this exciting new early literacy program at the Olathe Public Library, we invite you to attend one of our kick-off sessions:

Monday, August 25 - 10:15 a.m. at the Indian Creek Branch
Wednesday, August 27 - 9:15 a.m. at the Main Library

No registration required.  We'll share some stories, get creative, and hand out reading packets for 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten.  This is not a competition.  The only end date is when your child begins kindergarten, so take your time and enjoy the experience.  If you can't attend one of the kick-off sessions, you can still pick up a reading packet anytime at the Chidlren's Services desk at either Oalthe library beginning August 25.

LEGO Lock-In 2014

It was a fun evening of LEGO building at the Main Library for the families who attended our after-hours LEGO Lock-In on August 1.  This year we decided to do a collaborative build and worked together to create a LEGO neighborhood.  Each family built different components of our imaginary neighborhood which then came together at the end.  Click the pictures below to get a closer look.  We also invite you to stop by the Main Library to see these creations on display above the Easy DVD shelves.

If you missed out on our LEGO Lock-In, don't despair.  Our montly LEGO Club meetings for kids will resume in September.  Stay tuned for details.  The schedule of our fall programs and storytimes will be out soon!

Summer Reading Kick-Off 2014

It was a beautiful day on Tuesday for our Summer Reading Kick-Off at Frontier Park.  Over 900 people came out to the park to participate in all the fun activities and learn more about the library's summer reading reading programs for chidlren, teens and adults.  The Faraday Society from Olathe North High School kept the crowd enthralled with a variety of fun and exciting science demonstrations.  There were also chess games, relay races, temporary tattoos, old-fashioned games provided by Mahaffie Farmstead, summer reading folders, and more.  The Lenexa Sertoma Club sold food and drinks to help raise money to install a hearing loop for the hearing impaired in the meeting room at the Indian Creek Branch, and Olathe Noon Optimists provided free water to the thirsty throng.  A fun time was had by all.  A big thanks to all the volunteers who helped set up and run all the activities.  It was a great way to kick off our summer!  And we're only getting started.
