We're Off to See the Wizard!

Lions and tigers and bears, OH MY!  Are you a fan of the Wizard of Oz books or movie?  Then stop by the Children's Department at the Main Library on Wednesday, May 14 between 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. for our special "We're Off to See the Wizard!" program.  We will be celebrating the birthday of L. Frank Baum, the author of the Oz books, and all things Oz!  There will be crafts, games, snacks, and all kind of fun!  Children of all ages are welcome.  No registration, just drop in.  Come and go as you please.  Just follow the Yellow Brick Road to the Olathe Main Library!

You are also invited to come to the Indian Creek Branch on Tuesday, May 13 at 6:30 p.m. to watch "The Wizard of Oz" movie with Judy Garland.  The G-rated movie will be shown in the Meeting Room and lasts 102 minutes.  Come watch one of the best loved classic movies of all time!


4th Annual LEGO Design Contest Winners


The Olathe Public LIbrary's 4th Annual LEGO Design Contest was held on Saturday, April 26 at the Indian Creek Community Church.  It was another great event with kids from kindergarten through 10th grade competing for prizes with their original LEGO creations.  Judges from the KC Bricklab LEGO Users Group had their work cut out for them as they selected 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in four age cateogries:  K - 2nd grade, 3rd - 5th grade, 6th - 7th grade, and 8th - 10th grade.  The public also got to vote on their favorites for our Best of Show prizes.  You can check out the winners below, and stop by the Main Library in downtown Olathe to see some of the 1st place winners on display.

National Library Week 2014

National Library Week is April 13 - 19!  We will celebrate here on the Around the Corner blog with a quote each day from a different children's book about the joys of reading and books.  To get us started, here is Sunday's quote:

LEGO Design Contest 2014

Attention all LEGO builders!  The Olathe Public Library is excited to be holding our fourth annual LEGO Design Contest on Saturday, April 26 at the Indian Creek Community Church (12480 S. Black Bob Rd.)  This contest is for children in grades
K - 5th and teens in grades 6th - 12th.  There will be four age categories for the judging:  K - 2nd grade, 3rd - 5th grade,
6th - 8th grade, and 9th - 12th grade.  Prizes of Barnes & Noble gift cards will be awarded to the winners.  Our judges will be from the local KC Bricklab LEGO Users Group.  They will be looking for creativity, originality and inventiveness.  CLICK HERE for the complete Contest Rules & FAQs.

Registration is required and begins on Monday, April 7.  You may register online, in person at either Olathe library, or by calling (913) 971-6874.  There will be a limited number of contest slots available so register early!

The public is invited to come see all the entries during our Public Viewing between 2:30 - 3:45 p.m. and vote for the Best in Show award.  Everyone is also welcome to stay for the Awards Ceremony at 4:00 p.m.  Here is a quick rundown of the day's schedule:
