Summer Reading Program 2016

Our summer reading program theme is On Your Mark, Get Set...READ!  We have a variety of fun activities planned for kids of all ages.  You can also keep track of all the books you read this summer with a special summer reading log.  Logs will be available at the Downtown Library beginning May 16.  Return your reading log between August 1 - 19 and receive a free paperback book!  This summer we also have an online component called READsquared where you can play games, complete missions, earn badges, and more.  CLICK HERE for complete details about all of our summer activities.

Summer Storytimes

During the summer the Olathe Public Library offers Storytime in the Park at two city parks and an Evening Storytime at the Downtown Library.  CLICK HERE for more information and the complete schedule of times and locations.

SUMMER READING LOGS - For 5th grade & younger

Beginning Monday, May 16 and throughout the summer
All day, everyday at ​Downtown

All readers, going into 5th grade and younger, are invited to pick up a summer reading log at the Olathe Downtown Library beginning Monday, May 16 or anytime thereafter.  Use the log to record all of your summer reading.  Bring your reading log back between August 1 - 19 and receive a free paperback book.  Reading logs will be distributed throughout the summer at the Olathe Downtown Library and will also be available at our Summer Reading Kick-Off on May 31 at Frontier Park.

SUMMER BOOKMARK CONTEST - For 1st - 5th graders

Entry forms available at both libraries beginning Monday, May 16
Entry deadline is Monday, June 27
Winners announced Monday, July 11
Bookmarks will be available beginning Monday, July 25

Children entering grades 1st - 5th are invited to design a bookmark for the Olathe Public Library.  Entries will be judged by grade, and prizes will be awarded.  Winning entries will be printed and distributed at the Downtown Library at the end of the summer.  Beginning May 16 entry forms will be available at the Downtown Library, or CLICK HERE to download the form.

Our summer gets started with our Summer Reading Kick-Off.  Pick up a summer reading log and enjoy a variety of fun activities at Frontier Park.  In case of rain the Kick-Off will be cancelled.  This summer's theme is "On Your Mark, Get Set...READ!"  CLICK HERE for complete details about all of our summer programs.

After the Kick-Off swing by the Downtown Library for the Summer Reading Kick-Off Cook Out from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. (rain or shine).  The Lenexa Sertoma Club will be selling hot dogs, chips, drinks, and cookies to help raise funds to install hearing loop systems for the deaf and hard of hearing at Indian Creek Library’s new service desks.


1,000 Books Before Kindergarten! is a free program is designed to encourage you to read 1,000 books to your child before he or she enters kindergarten.  Click here to learn more and find out how you can get started.
